Renewable Energy Consumer Code

Renewable Energy Consumer Code

The aim of RECC is to guarantee a high-quality experience for consumers wishing to buy or lease small-scale energy generation systems for their homes. The code is backed by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) as part of the Consumer Codes Approval Scheme. Members of RECC agree to comply with the code’s requirements. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme

MCS certification demonstrates compliance with industry standards that companies strive to meet. Membership highlights to consumers that companies are able to consistently install to the highest quality every time.

1. Acceptance of Proposal

1.1 The Quotation is valid for 30 days from the date indicated. To proceed, both copies of this contract must be signed. One copy should be returned to us and the other retained for your records. No contract is in place until we send an acknowledgement of the order.

1.2 Please read these terms carefully before signing. If you need explanations, please contact us using the address or telephone number provided.

1.3 This agreement is governed by English law and the English courts, or by the law governing where your property is located if outside England or Wales.

Your Right to Cancel(See Section 9 below for more on your cancellation rights)

1.4 You have the right to cancel this contract during the ‘cancellation period’ without giving any reason. The cancellation period lasts 14 days and starts on the day the last part of the goods relating to the contract is delivered. You may also cancel without penalty before any goods are delivered.

1.5 To cancel, you must inform us of your decision by a clear statement via letter sent by post or email to Northern Renewables, New Devonshire House, Devonshire Street, Keighley, BD21 2AQ, 0330 030 8998, hello@northernrenewables.net. You may also use the attached cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. Any advance payments will be returned. Canceling after the cancellation period may require you to pay costs, and we may retain all or part of your deposit and further advance payments as a contribution (see paragraph 9.1.1).

2. Our Main Obligation

Our main obligation is to carry out work with all reasonable care and skill according to the standards set by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and the timetable in the Quotation. Only certified companies may contract for the sale and installation of a system. Our MCS Certification number is on page 1 of these terms.

2.1 We will carry out planning, installation, and commissioning with reasonable care and skill. The goods supplied will: be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, operate as described, and match the model examined.

2.1.1 We will inform you in writing of any contractor engaged for installation and take full responsibility for their work and compliance with the Consumer Code.

The Timetable

2.2 We agree to supply goods and carry out installation as specified in the timetable. Your acceptance indicates agreement with the timetable.

2.2.1 We will make every effort to complete work on time, but delays may occur due to factors beyond our control, such as severe weather.

2.2.2 If delays occur, we will inform you and adjust the timetable in writing.

2.2.3 For delays beyond 30 days, you may be offered equivalent MCS-certified products. You may accept the offer, wait for the original products, or cancel the contract (see sections 9.2 and 9.3).

2.2.4 Compensation is available for significant delays caused by us.

2.2.5 You may cancel the contract if unreasonable delays occur for reasons within our control.

2.2.6 We will accommodate minor delays caused by you without compensation.

2.2.7 If your delay causes extra costs, the price will be adjusted according to the quote.

3. Our Other Obligations

3.1 Work and communication will comply with the Consumer Code.

3.2 Installation will comply with relevant MCS installer standards (MIS 3002).

3.3 After commissioning, all guarantees, test certificates, and relevant documentation will be provided, no later than seven days after commissioning.

3.4 All required documentation, including MCS installation registration certificates, will be given within 10 working days.

3.5 Guarantees will cover goods and installation, comply with the Consumer Code, and be explained both verbally and in writing.

3.6 Guarantees will be honoured even if the installer enters receivership, administration, or bankruptcy.

4. Your Main Obligation

4.1 You will pay the deposit specified in the Quotation when signing. Deposits cannot exceed 25% of the total contract price. Deposits will be returned if the contract is cancelled within the cancellation period.

4.1.1 If the deposit is paid before inspection and the installation cannot proceed, it will be refunded within two weeks.

4.2 Advance payments will be detailed in the Quotation.

4.3 Further advance payments may be requested, but will not exceed 60% of the total price before installation and will only be used for contract work.

4.4 If we enter receivership, administration, or bankruptcy, deposits and advance payments are protected.

4.5 The final balance is invoiced after installation. Minor defects cannot justify withholding more than a proportionate amount.

4.6 Late payment may incur interest at 2.5% above the Bank of England base rate. Work may be suspended for late payment, and additional costs may be recovered.

5. Your Other Obligations

5.1 You must obtain all relevant approvals and permissions before installation. Permissions and drawings must be available for inspection.

5.2 You must provide, free of charge: water, washing facilities, electricity supply, storage space, and safe access to the property and installation location.

5.3 Preparatory work must be completed by competent persons before installation. Failure may invoke clause 2.2.7.

5.4 Breaches may incur additional costs, which you may need to compensate (see section 7).

6. Change of Work

6.1 Any changes requested must be approved and feasible.

6.2 Requests must be confirmed in writing within 14 days.

6.3 Pricing adjustments will be made by agreement or reasonable estimate.

6.4 Extra work may incur additional costs, which we will minimize.

6.5 Significant design changes allow you to cancel the contract (clause 9.4).

7. Unexpected Work

7.1 Costs for unexpected work are detailed in the Quotation.

7.2 We will inform you and ask how to proceed.

8. Delivery, Title, and Risk

8.1 Goods will be delivered to the location specified.

8.2 Payments are insured in case of our receivership or bankruptcy. Guarantees remain valid.

8.3 Insurance details will be provided upon signing.

8.4 Deposits and advance payments may be placed in a protected client account.

8.5 Goods purchased on your behalf become your property once paid and identified.

8.6 If the contract ends early, goods must be returned or made available for collection.

8.7 Until ownership passes, you must store goods separately, maintain them, and not deface or destroy identifying marks.

9. Contract Cancellation

9.1 Cancellation rights are in sections 1.4 and 1.5.

9.1.1 Cancelling after the period may require compensation; deposits may be retained.

9.1.2 Work started during the cancellation period may incur costs if cancelled.

9.2 Delays outside your control allow full refunds.

9.3 Breach of contract by us entitles remedies depending on circumstances.

9.3.1 Remedies include repeat performance or price reduction.

9.3.2 Faulty goods allow repair, replacement, refund, or compensation.

9.4 Significant design changes allow contract cancellation with deposit/advance refund.

9.5 Breaches by you may lead to contract cancellation after notice and 14 days to remedy.

9.6 Losses due to your breach may require compensation.

10. Dispute Resolution

10.1 Disputes may be referred to RECC’s dispute resolution process. RECC is certified by CTSI as an Alternative Dispute Resolution provider. More info: RECC How to Complain.
